Brown spots are no better or worse than age spots on skin and can be a nuisance. Apparently, brown spots on skin result from over exposure to sun over several years. Brown spots (also known as age spots, liver spots and freckles) appear due to increased melanin concentration on exposed skin over arms, hands, face and shoulders.
Fortunately, there are quite a few numbers of effective options to deal with brown spots and the most common one of them is sold in the market as skin bleaching or whitening cream which contains hydroquinone in varying percentages. Topical application consists of a few other creams but they are formulated with other ingredients such as Tritinoin A, hydroxyl acids, Kojic acids etc and sometimes skin whitening creams also come in combinations of all or some of these ingredients, which are proprietary preparations. While these creams are effective in removing age spots or brown spots on skin they can cause irritation or inflammation depending on your skin type and unsuitable concentration of the ingredients. It’s a good idea to use them under medical advice, no matter whether yours is OTC product or not.
Other topical application creams for dealing with brown spots on skin include chemical peeling agents that remove the top layers of sun damaged skin which eventually reveal even looking skin underneath. But mind it that chemical peeling agents are not usually advised to be used for sensitive areas around eyes for the same reason as dermabrassion because of the potential risks involved.
Age spots or brown spots on skin are effectively treated with laser resurfacing and cryogenic freezing off of the age spots. While both these are capable of improving skin complexion by being able to remove a couple of layers off the skin, they are not without their associated pains that you are required to suffer for a couple of weeks.
The generally used lasers in treating age spots or brown spots on skin are carbon dioxide laser or IPL while the cryogenic technique differs entirely where it makes use of super cold nitrogen (-3190F). The cold nitrogen is sprayed over the undesired spots and contracted before being removed.
Like medicines, treatment for age spots or brown spots on skin with laser and/or cryogenic nitrogen leaves their side effects on your skin. Laser treatment may cause nausea in some patients for a short period while on the longer term (of 2-4 weeks) reddening of the surrounding area of treatment, inflammation may result. These two treatments have better efficacy rates and long lasting results than topical applications are chemical peeling.
