Have you been through any skincare forums lately? If you had, the sheer number of threads on skin whitening pills must have avowed you for sure. Now cut back to a scene in a southern state in the US, wherein 300 people recently found dead, had traces of mercury in their abdomen which eventually were traced back to the skin whitening pills they were consuming. Come to think of it, colonial states, Central America, Middle East and Pakistan have higher incidences of people succumbing to their desire for fairer skins and in most cases; it is the whitening pills that is pinned as being the culprit.
Of late, there have been promotions for new drugs containing molecules that are hailed as not just harmless to skin but also as the master formula for skin lightening. The drug molecule used in the skin whitening pills these days is Glutathione. It is said that Glutathione works on the free radical anti-oxidants and detoxify skin from a number of compounds. The skin whitening pills containing Glutathione is claimed to be metabolically non active and so are harmless to skin when used in reduced form. But believe me, there are not many people that are aware of such technicalities nor are there producers that print this information on the label.
Aren’t there side effects of Glutathione? There are, but look at how the makers present their version of side effects. According to them, the drug acts primarily on improving the immune system with active goodies such as amino acids, vitamin C and alpha lippoic acids etc, and that the side effect of it – lightening/whitening of skin – occurs only when the dose is doubled. Amazing!
Does it mean that there is no hope for skin whitening? Then how did Michael Jackson do it? Wait, here we need to get a few things pretty clear. Skin whitening is not solely dependent on the touted skin whitening pills; they are absolutely two different things, and in a worst case scenario, skin whitening pills can also be harmful. Then there is the magic of Michael Jackson; he got his skin whitened through some marvelous and super expensive medical wonders but definitely not by using prescription or OTC skin whitening pills.
What really disheartens me is the presumption that all OTC drugs are absolutely harmless; this triggers a mad rush to buy hyped up drugs such as this. Take care and if you really want to be able to whiten your skin, don’t be under any impression that bulletin board discussions are substitutes to consultations with doctors. Pills are pills, no matter if they are for skin.
